Sean's Story

Cambridge Cyrenians

Hailing from Germany, Sean decided to take a gap-year opportunity, and currently volunteers for Cambridge Cyrenians, a homelessness charity in Cambridge, UK. They have found the experience incredibly fulfilling and the individuals we support benefit from our volunteer's support.

Sean, a dedicated volunteer from Germany, joined Cambridge Cyrenians in September 2024 as part of a gap year experience. With a passion for books, deep conversations, and long walks, they were eager to step outside their comfort zone, gain new skills, and make a meaningful impact in the community.

“I wanted to go abroad after finishing school, and a gap year sounded perfect,” they explain. “When I found Cambridge Cyrenians, I knew it was the right opportunity.”

For over fifty years, Cambridge Cyrenians has supported individuals experiencing homelessness in Cambridge. Their work includes providing supported accommodation, community and meaningful activities such as the allotment project, mental health support, and specialist services like the Older Homeless Service.

Over the course of their volunteering journey, Sean has embraced every aspect of the experience, from meeting new people to exploring the charity’s projects across Cambridge. They particularly appreciate how volunteers are fully integrated into the organisation, allowing them to gain hands-on experience in a range of areas.

Through volunteering, Sean has grown both personally and professionally. “I’ve learned to be more independent and self-confident. I now have a better understanding of my strengths and weaknesses and how to work with them,” they reflect.

While some challenges, such as feeling overwhelmed at the beginning and experiencing homesickness were difficult at first, Sean found ways to adapt. Over time, Cambridge Cyrenians began to feel like a second home. “It’s all part of the experience, and you learn to navigate through it,” they say.

One of the highlights of their time at Cambridge Cyrenians has been the connections they’ve built with residents. Though confidentiality prevents sharing many of our stories, Sean treasures the shared meals, laughter, and meaningful conversations that make every day special.

For anyone considering volunteering, Sean’s advice is simple: “Stop thinking about it and do it! It’s an amazing opportunity to experience different aspects of work and life. A once-in-a-lifetime experience.”
