Tyler's Story
Wrexham Africa Community CIC
At just 23, I became a voluntary director, leading community projects that celebrate diversity and inclusion. From organising Afro Fiesta to supporting local initiatives, my journey is driven by passion, resilience, and a commitment to making a lasting impact in Wrexham and beyond.
My name is Tyler Agyapong, and at 23 years old, I have the privilege of serving as a voluntary director for Wrexham Africa Community, Obehi’s African Community Grocery Store, and Afro Fiesta. My journey into volunteering and community leadership has been both challenging and rewarding, shaping me into the person I am today.
I started my journey at just 18 years old when it was just Wrexham Africa Community. I first became involved in community work following in the footsteps of my late father. Growing up, I witnessed first-hand the challenges faced by ethnic minority communities, including a lack of representation, cultural understanding, and opportunities. I wanted to be part of the solution, helping to build bridges between different cultures and ensuring that everyone felt a sense of belonging.
One of the most fulfilling aspects of my role has been organising Afro Fiesta, an annual celebration of African and Caribbean cultures. Seeing people from all backgrounds come together to enjoy music, food, and dance has been incredibly rewarding. Beyond the event itself, it has created opportunities for people to learn, appreciate, and embrace cultural diversity.
Being part of this journey has taught me so much about leadership, resilience, and teamwork. I have had the privilege of working with a dedicated team who share my passion for community engagement. Together, we have worked on various initiatives, from cultural awareness programs to community outreach projects that support ethnic minority communities, asylum seekers, and refugees. Seeing the positive impact we have made on people’s lives has been one of the greatest rewards of my work.
Volunteering has also helped me grow personally. I have developed essential skills such as communication, problem-solving, and event management. I have learned how to navigate challenges, manage resources effectively, and build relationships with key stakeholders. Most importantly, I have gained a deeper understanding of different cultures and perspectives, which has shaped my outlook on life and strengthened my commitment to inclusivity and equality.
However, the journey has not been without its challenges. Financial constraints have often posed obstacles to organising events and running community projects. There have been times when securing funding seemed nearly impossible, but we persevered by seeking partnerships, applying for grants, and organising fundraising activities. Another challenge has been addressing misconceptions about cultural events and diversity initiatives. Some people were initially hesitant to engage, but through open dialogue and community involvement, we have gradually built trust and fostered a sense of unity.
One memorable moment that stands out was during one of our Afro Fiesta events when a local family approached us to express their gratitude. They shared how the event had opened their eyes to different cultures and traditions, and how their children had been inspired by the performances and storytelling sessions. Moments like these remind me why I do what I do—it’s about creating connections, breaking barriers, and building a more inclusive society.
For anyone considering volunteering, I would say: go for it! It’s an opportunity to grow, learn, and positively impact the lives of others. Whether you choose to volunteer in community events, mentoring, or support services, you will find that giving your time and skills to a cause you believe in is incredibly fulfilling. It’s not just about what you can offer; it’s also about what you gain—new experiences, friendships, and the satisfaction of knowing you have made a difference.
To those who are unsure about where to start, I encourage you to look within your community. Find a cause that resonates with you, reach out to organisations, and take that first step. Volunteering is not just about giving your time, it’s about being part of something bigger than yourself, working towards positive change, and leaving a lasting impact on those around you.
Looking ahead, I am excited to continue growing as a leader and expanding our community initiatives. I hope to inspire more young people to take on leadership roles and get involved in community work. My journey started at 18, and in just a few years, I have seen how one person’s dedication can lead to meaningful change. If my story can encourage even one person to take action, then every challenge and effort has been worth it.
Being a voluntary director at such a young age has been a life-changing experience, and I am grateful for the opportunities it has given me. I look forward to continuing my work, learning from others, and contributing to a more inclusive and united community.
